Today the 19th of May 2013 marks 19 years since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was born on July 28 1929 to Janet Norton Lee and John Bouvier. Jacqueline spent her early years living in New York. In 1947, Jacqueline spent her first two years of college at Vassar College, and then spent her junior year in France at the University of Grenoble, and at the Sorbonne in Paris. Upon returning home to the U.S, she transferred to The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., she graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French literature.

In January of 1952 she went to work as an Inquiring Photographer for The Washington Times-Herald. During an assignment, she met U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy, they were later married on September 12, 1953. After having one stillborn daughter, Arabella, their second daughter Caroline was born on November 27, 1957. Their first son John was born on November 25, 1960.

In 1961 John F. Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy spent the White House years doing her best to save the historical landmarks around Washington. In August of 1963 she went into labor with their fourth child, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, but sadly, he died shortly after birth. In November 1963 Jacqueline accompanied her husband John to Texas. She was sitting next to him in the open-air limousine on November 22, 1963, when President John F Kennedy was assassinated. Her steadiness and courage after her husband’s assassination and funeral won her admiration around the world.

In 1968 her brother-in-law, Robert F. Kennedy, was also assassinated. After the murders of her husband and brother-in-law, she came to the conclusion that she and her family could not live safely in the US any longer. On October 20, 1968, she married Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis. After he died in 1975, she returned to New York.

In 1975 Jacqueline decided to find work that would be fulfilling to her. She had always enjoyed writing and literature, in 1975 she accepted a job offer as an editor at Viking Press. In 1978 she moved to Doubleday as an associate editor under an old friend, John Sargent. Also in 1975 Jacqueline was at the centre of a public relations battle that ultimately saved Grand Central Terminal from being destroyed by a redevelopment plan.

In 1988 Jacqueline became a grandmother, she was known to her grandchildren as ‘Grand Jackie’; Rose 1988, Tatiana 1990 and John 1993. Jacqueline dedicated the last 20 years of her life to her work as an editor, her children, her grandchildren and her companion Maurice Templeton.

I showed this picture to somebody at work, and they asked if that was my nephew. I sarcastically answered; “yes, this picture was taken in 1964.” She stood there and looked confused and said oh wow that’s cool… Omg.

One of President John F Kennedy’s first loves was sailing, the culprit? The Victura, a Wianno Senior 25-foot (7.7 metre) gaff rigged sloop. Though he had enjoyed sailing since he began as a child, his 15th birthday present The Victura, which he received off his parents was his favourite boat, and he avidly sailed The Victura off Cape Cod. The Victura is made entirely of wood, it was built in Osterville, Massachusetts by the Crosby Yacht Yard in 1932.

Today, The Victura, now stands on the lawn of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, with its bow pointed toward the horizon.
